Cats sleep a lot, but they do get up and about throughout the day and most enjoy playing and spending time with their owners. If you notice your cat is sleeping more than usual, seems sluggish, or has lost interest in normal activities, it could very well be a sign that something is wrong. Lethargy can be caused by many things and should be brought to the attention of a veterinarian immediately.

Vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by many different things, some as mild as an upset tummy and others, like liver disease, much more serious. Any prolonged vomiting or diarrhea should be cause for alarm and a vet visit should certainly be scheduled.

#3 – Yellowish Discoloration

The condition of the yellowing of the skin and body tissues is called icterus or jaundice. When the liver begins to fail, it’s very common for the body to change to a yellow color. If you notice this, you should take your cat to the veterinarian immediately and it is fair cause for an emergency visit.

#4 – Loss of Appetite

When cats don’t feel well, they usually don’t want to eat. We can’t blame them, but we don’t want to make their condition worse. While inappetence is a symptom of liver disease, not eating itself is also a cause. When cats don’t eat, a condition known as fatty liver takes place and your cat will be in more trouble than before. If you notice your cat skipping even one meal, be sure to see a veterinarian.

#5 – Distended Abdomen

Many types of liver disease will result in the abdomen filling with fluid and becoming distended. Even liver tumors can create this effect. If you notice your cat has a swollen belly, it’s important to seek veterinary care as soon as possible. Regardless of the cause, this is a very uncomfortable condition for our cats.
