“A critical Rescue Rebuild recently took place at Sojourner Center, a safe haven from domestic violence for women and their children in Arizona. Our project here was a part of a growing movement to assist victims and their pets in times of crisis. We hope that one day, all domestic violence shelters will offer pet-friendly facilities, and that will only happen one shelter renovation at a time!

“Rescue Rebuild partnered with RedRover, and we were able to come together at Sojourner Center and do everything we can do to keep people and their pets together.

“Volunteers demolished an existing room and bathroom to create a cat quarantine room and then to enlarge the cat colony room. To give the cats an outdoor space, the team also installed a catio. Creativity is absolutely endless with cats! Kate Benjamin, founder of Hauspanther, who is a longtime partner of our good friend Jackson Galaxy, helped design this beautiful, safe space. More room for all the cats filled with bridges, boxes, and benches galore. And hexagons.

“Oh, the joys of building hexagons! They certainly look cool, but boy are they tough to build. Something about making an item with six sides would certainly be easier with six hands! Of course, that is never the case when constructing them. In fact, having four hands is even rare. Ratchet straps are a wonderful invention, and if they didn’t exist, then neither would our hexagons. Patience… lots of patience.

“All that hard work made for an amazing room where cats that have come from some challenging situations can relax with their owners and know that they are safe and comfortable. We love building relaxing spaces where both animals and people alike can decompress and begin the next phase of their lives where they are safe and secure.”
