6 Reasons to Adopt a Black Cat

| Published on August 27, 2015

Shelters all across the country report that their resident black cats get the short end of the stick when it comes to adoption rates. Whether potential adopters subconsciously buy into the stigma of black cats being bad luck, or are more drawn to cats with distinctive colorings or patterns, it does a great disservice to these overlooked beauties. A black cat can make a great mutually-beneficial addition to your family.

1. Lowest Adoption Rate
As mentioned earlier, black cats have dismally low adoption rates. When you adopt a black cat, you are giving a forever home to a cat who has likely been waiting longer than his shelter-mates. He’ll be so thankful.

2. Highest Euthanasia Rate
Many shelters resort to euthanizing cats who aren’t getting adopted in order to make room for cats who are more likely to find homes. When you adopt a black cat you are literally saving a life.

3. They Actually Aren’t Bad Luck
The myth that black cats are bad luck is outdated and just plain silly. In fact, the amount of love they’ll give you will make you feel like the luckiest person alive.

4. Love Sees No Color
We all know that love comes from an emotional connection, not the color of one’s hair. Imagine how dull your life would be if you never allowed yourself to love human brunettes. Opening your heart to a black cat could provide you with one of the most loving friendships of your life.

5. Mini Panthers
Black cats are basically mini panthers. How regal!

6. They’re Just Cats
At the end of the day, the best reason to adopt a black cat is that they are just like every other cat. Some are sweet, some are sassy, some are lap cats, some are not. Each will have its own unique personality and temperament. Just like every other cat, black cats just want to be loved and cared for. They just want a chance.
